Community

Many of the projects that Sofie has been involved in have a participative element at their core, often collaborating with other artists, musicians, writers and makers. Stories are told and ideas are gathered, and these become the narrative or artistic manifestation of the shared experience.

The projects create artworks, performances or installations fed by the collective voices of participants, who may be hospitalised children with renal failure, elders or rural communities. This could be a series of making workshops, to create visual elements for an installation, or the recording and integration of voice in a soundscape. The collaborative process gives people the tools to make an object, which becomes part of a body of work that stands as a legacy beyond the project itself. Sofie has created work in places as diverse as the Tower of London, Kew Gardens and a motorway underpass.

Education

In addition to larger participative projects, Sofie has worked within school settings exploring creativity and finding ways of working that push the boundaries of the traditional expectations of a school’s art programme. Sofie’s process encourages children and teachers to create an artistic project in the same way that an artist would, and is as much about the exploratory journey as the end product. The project’s legacy could be a permanent work that transforms the visual and psychological ways in which parts of a school are seen, or the impact on the individual, whether pupil or teacher.
